Chain length is important, but it is not the whole formula
C22 behentrimonium grades are often selected for rich softness and conditioning, while C18 steartrimonium grades provide established routes across conditioners, shampoos and salon systems. Active content, counterion, solvent or carrier, fatty alcohol level and total formula can be equally influential.
Compare products at equivalent active levels where practical, then evaluate process, wet comb, dry comb, volume, rinse feel, build-up and stability. Record the actual commercial grade used because two products with related INCI names may not be interchangeable on a one-for-one basis.
